IMG_20150928_134801788 I still remember my first ever interaction with Chef/Owner Manu Chandra at the opening of Monkey bar at Vasant Kunj. I was impressed with the young and confident Chef who had carved his name in Bangalore with Monkey Bar and ready to rock Delhi with The Fatty Bao.

The Fatty Bao is a modern, trendy and chic gastropub with an excellent bar. The flavors are bold and the emphasis is to get it right. Well yes, they got it right too! This is a Pan Asian and focus is definitely on, to get some dishes across Asia – Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and other Asian counties.

This was my second visit and I tried ed lot of dishes. Anshu Arora has created ed excellent design that makes the place vibrant and colorful.

IMG_20150928_140726750Pan Asian seems to be the flavour of the season and Fatty Bao is trying to fill the gap between fine dining and regular places.

We started off with Sushi, Nigri(salmon) and California roll(crab meat). The sushi couldn’t’ hold the rice. While trying to pick the roll, it breaks and the Nigri fell from the chopstick onto the sauce and didn’t break. Ideally, the rice ball should be firm enough to hold together, however loose enough to fall apart in your mouth. The wasabi prawns were well-cooked with the perfect balance of pungent flavour of wasabi – felt like heaven!

The wild mushroom and truffle oil dimsums were good too and I loved it, even though it was a vegetarian dish and I couldn’t get the flavour of truffle oil in it.

IMG_20150825_125630437_HDRNext was the famous Bao. We tried pork, duck and tenderloin and all three were absolutely delicious. In the soft Bao, the meats were well cooked, had the right balance of flavour, crunchiness of veggies. It tasted divine! Pork belly wasn’t evenly sliced inside the bao and it was little inconvenient to hold it and to avoid food dripping while biting into the Bao. The Srilankan pork belly was good, however, some slices were undercooked and we share the concern with Manager too. Even with all of the hit as well as misses, the seasoning was great and flavours were amazing!

The lamb massaman curry, a thai curry which is inspired from Persian cuisine was mild in flavour. I was expecting it to be little spicy. Jasmine rice served along with it, lacked the flavour.

IMG_20150928_152304251We finished our meal with Japanese cheesecake. It was fluffier, lighter and soft – A kind of cheesecake I have not tasted before and the secret behind it was Meringue. I loved Zen Forrest – yuzu parfait ( citrus flavour), with sesame nougatine ( cruncy sesame ) and beetroot sorbet – A delightful forest with the classic presentation!

I had the raspberry sour which according to me was nice as a cocktail but the raspberry essences or syrup used in it gave an artificial or soapy flavour. Very unnatural types. Manu and his team need to pull up their socks on this as this according to me can be a world class brand. IMG_20150928_152325319Fatty Bao is surely a great addition to the ever growing restaurant chains and will have great fan followers who love eating pan Asian food. With all the hits and with further improvisation – this place will surely delight you.

MFMBites  – the Bao can’t be missed and so is the pork belly. One should try ramen as well. Desserts too shouldn’t be missed.
