The moment you get inside the big door, you will see a new world – A world full of old memories, stories and old classics which over the time has been forgotten as we are busy with our lives and do not have time.

Maneesh Srivastva, food , travel and lifestyle blogger, photographer, mysticfoodiemantra.com haveli dharampura, chandani chowk, lakhori restaurantWelcome to Haveli Dharampura, a restored heritage haweli which took more than 7 years to complete. This haveli, portrays Mughals and Marwaris/Jain culture. This place also portrays the story of Mughal Emperor Shahjahan, who moved his capital – Agra and built a new capital called shahjahanabad. It had chandni chowk on one side and Jama masjid on the other side.

Rajya Sabha MP and President of Heritage India Foundation (HIF) Shri Vijay Goel and his son Siddhant Goel took over the haveli and started the restoration process almost six years ago. There were almost 60 rooms here, which got converted into 13 rooms along with one PDR at their restaurant Lakhori. Spread over three floors where each floor has refurbished luxury rooms and the rooftop has the most gorgeous view. You can see Red Fort, Jama masjid, Jain Temple and Seeshganj Gurudwara from the rooftop.

While we were talking tour of this haveli, Vidyun (daughter of Mr. Vijay Goel) shared that they have planned lot of dance performances which guests would enjoy in the evenings. Interestingly this whole area is called dharampura as there are lot of Jain temples in the vicinity.Maneesh Srivastva, food , travel and lifestyle blogger, photographer, mysticfoodiemantra.com haveli dharampura, chandani chowk, lakhori restaurant

Lakhori – The old world restaurant

Food served at Lakhori is amalgamation of food from Chandni chowk and bit of jama masjid. They don’t yet have the liquor license, however will get it soon. They have mocktails and smoothies which is mixture of fruits and berries. I loved Jahan Ara( khus missed with green chilli.). Smoothies and mocktails have very strong flavour and were too sweet for me. Chai biscuit tasted more like chocolate milk mixed with biscuit.

Palak Patta chat and Dahi Puri were good; however I wouldn’t prefer flavoured water served with dahi puri. Galauti kebab and murg ke paarchey are great too. My personal disliking is the cream on top of Murg ke paarchey, however some folks do relish the same. Mutton Korma wasn’t anything extraordinary. Kofta Dogala’s gravy was filled with cashewnut paste and the makhni gravy lacked the flavour. Paan kulfi was the best of the lot and good way to finish the meal.

Apart from the view which you can see from top, you will also find a view gallery here. They are planning to showcase pictures clicked by various photographers and artists. They also have spa for their guests which will be state of the art. Another interesting is the heritage library and the art gallery.

“At the time of independence in 1947, all the states merged into the republic of India, and a modern, democratic nation was born. The royal families were derecognised by the Constitution of India in 1971, and their privileges withdrawn. Fortunately, the lifestyle they represented, ingrained over centuries, has remained untouched. Scions of the great dynasties that once ruled over independent states continue to live graciously, though they are now industrialists, professionals, and even hoteliers. The premium positions they occupied by birth have now been replaced by merit, but for those who have managed to convert their ancestral homes into hotels, the way of the past has become a charming reminder of the way their families once occupied different wings of their palaces. Welcome Heritage pays homage to that spirit through its umbrella of charming heritage hotels”.
