I sighted the Tashi Namgay Resort in Paro from my Drukair flight just before it landed. At that time, I didn’t know that it was the resort where I would be staying. It stood out from the rest of the structures because of its distinct Bhutanese architecture. For me Tashi Namgay scores when it comes to its location. A mere 10 minutes drive from the Paro airport, right on the banks of the pristine trout filled Pachu river and in close proximity to the major sightseeing spots, location wise it couldn’t get better.

Accommodation is divided into deluxe, deluxe cottages, junior suites and executive suite. My river facing deluxe cottage had me waking up to birds chirping and the river gurgling by-something I already miss back home. The all day dining restaurant offers Indian, Chinese, Continental and Bhutanese cuisine with both indoor and al fresco seating. In the afternoon, it was a visually delightful meal for me as I sat with the cool breeze blowing, viewing the Paro runway to the left, the dzong or fortress and museum while relishing ema datshi which is Bhutan’s national dish and is a fiery combination of chillies and cheese, red rice, shamu datshi or mushrooms in cheese, radish hogay or salad with suja or butter tea.

Tashi Namgay Resort is the only property in Bhutan offering filtered spring water which has healing properties apart from mineral bottled water. The Zee Bar stocks international spirits as well as local alcohol and in the evening guests can enjoy a drink watching a football match on Tv. A lot of resorts in Paro don’t have conference halls but Tashi Namgay has two- the rooftop Thoka Hall and Executive Hall with an attached VIP room.  A number of international meetings have been conducted at these halls.

Karma Jigme, Managing Director, Tashi Namgay Resort adds, “Our resort is a harmonious blend with nature and this reflects in its natural location next to the Pachu river and amidst soothing greenery. We have used stones from the river and timber from our ancestral home to construct our resort and give guests the traditional Bhutanese feel. At the River Stone Restaurant we organize bonfires, bar- be- ques’ and private dining. Our setting is magical.”

In the evenings, I enjoyed walking down to the Pachu river and soaking my feet in its cold clear water. One can also sit on the circular cut tree trunks and watch the river while munching on yummy snacks as the evening fresh non polluted breeze relaxes you.

Some of the inhouse activities include pampering yourself with traditional Bhutanese and Western therapies at the Bay-Yul Spa, steam and sauna, gymming at the fitness centre, spotting trout at the Trout Lake, playing Bhutanese sports of archery, dart game and shot put at the Bhutanese Garden, walking amidst nature or walking around the Chef’s Organic Garden, learning how to cook Bhutanese cuisine, souvenir shopping in the lobby’s handicraft shop and relaxing reading a book, sipping tea or drinks and sunbathing at the Beach Café cum tea house.

The beach café has been the venue of quite a few crème de la crème private dining parties. Its white sandy beach is the only man made beach in Bhutan. Some of the outdoor activities include biking to the town of Paro or hiking to the sacred Guru Nye.
